You doesn’t have to cook for hours. Cocktail recipes go even faster. You can often make a cocktail within 5 minutes. Depending on the ingredients you need. Today a cocktail that I wouldn’t take first if I saw a card in front of me, but one that you should definitely try. Not everyone likes this cocktail, but you can only find out if you have try! The meaning of Bloody Mary is:

”A cocktail that is well known for his red color. The cocktail contains vodka, tomato juice, Worcestershire sauce, Tabasco, salt, pepper and lemon juice”.

A mojito is a cocktail that everyone knows, I think Bloody Mary also belongs to this list. It is a cocktail that stands out because of its red color, but also because of the ingredients. Which cocktail does have the combination of tomato juice, herbs and Tabasco? The combination alone will raise many different questions. The question that came to mind: who has invented this drink?

History Bloody Mary

The cocktail was invented between the 1920s and 1930s. Different theory circulate about the background for making this cocktail. Thus, the invention is claimed by a French Bartender. The cocktail was made on a whim. The cocktail then consisted of fewer ingredients. Only vodka and tomato juice was used in 1921. The cocktail was also known under the name: ”Bucket of Blood” because of its red color.

The first publication of the recipe was done in 1939. Hereby the name of the recipe was still Mary Rose. The same ingredients were used as the Bloody Mary that is made today.

In 1942 the cocktail was reclaimed and the name was changed as well. Thus the name of the Cocktail became Red Hammer. After the recipe was published, an advertisement for the Worcestershire sauce indicated that it could be added to the drink. That was the moment that this sauce become one of the main ingredients. For the people who are wondering which person was the inspiration for the name of the drink: the name Bloody Mary refers to Queen Mary I of England. Her nickname was Bloody Mary.

Bloody Mary Recipe

This cocktail recipe is so easy. You need the following ingredients: vodka, tomato juice, lemon juice, Worcestershire sauce, Tabasco, salt, black pepper, celery and ice cubes.

The first step in making this cocktail is determining whether you are going to use a shaker or immediately in your long-drink glass. Once you have made the choice, it’s time to grab the bottle of vodka. You need 35 ml. If you want to use more, this is always possible. Add the vodka to the glass and then measure out the 85 ml tomato juice. I advise you not to add everything right away. You want there to be enough ice in your glass. Later you can add some more tomato juice!

Then cut a lemon in half. You need the lemon juice from one half. Add this to the glass. Then add 3 drops of Worcestershire sauce and Tabasco. This doesn’t sound like much, but when you have mixed everything together, you can still choose to add more Tabasco if you want the cocktail to be spicier. The ingredients have been added now mix everything together with a spoon.

Add a little pepper on the top with some salt. Mix it together. You can now add some ice and the celery stick. If you still have room in your glass, you can add even more tomato juice. Taste your cocktail if you need more of a particular ingredient!

  • The first step is to grab a long-drink glass (or a shaker).
  • Measure the 35 ml vodka and add this to the glass.
  • Measure the 85 ml tomato juice and add this to the glass. Make sure your glass isn't that full.

  • Add the Worcestershire sauce and Tabasco. If you like spicy you can add more drops. Mix everything together with a spoon.

  • Add some more ice (if there is still room for) and the celery stick. Enjoy this cocktail!

Notes

  • My advice with the tomato juice is to to add too little rather than too much. You can still refill later. This way you can ensure that you have enough ice in your glass instead of your glass overflowing otherwise.
  • Again add to little Tabasco rather than too much. Taste the drink if everything is in the glass. If you want a more spicy taste you can add more drops!
