Today a new knowledge base article. I have been getting a lot of questions via e-mails lately and I want to answer them as best I can. In addition, it is also interesting for myself to find out new things, if I do not know them yet. You cannot know everything. This knowledge base article is about the different types of bread crumbs.

What are bread crumbs

Before I go into the different types of breadcrumbs out there, it is useful to briefly explain what bread crumbs are. The name actually says it all: breadcrumbs are small and dry bread particles. You can use these to thicken dishes or to get a crunchy layer when you fry food.

Types of Bread crumbs

When you talk about bread crumbs you actually have 5 categories:

Dried bread crumbs

Fresh bread crumbs

Panko

Plain

Italian

Below I will further discuss each category with which dishes can be used with which type of breadcrumbs.

Dried Bread Crumbs

As the name implies, dried breadcrumbs are made from bread that has been toasted or baked. By toasting and / or baking the bread, the moisture in the bread is removed. This leaves you with dry breadcrumbs. The texture of the crumb can be sandy. You can also easily make these breadcrumbs yourself. You need bread and a food processor for this. Place the bread in the food processor and mix well. The bread will be cut into small pieces. In between you can check if you are satisfied with the crumbs! When you are satisfied, all you have to do is roast them in the oven. You can choose to add ingredients for more flavor. You can think of salt, pepper or olive oil.

Dishes where you can use these breadcrumbs are:

Casseroles / Gratins

Fresh Bread Crumbs

The second category is fresh bread crumbs. The name actually says it all. They are fresh breadcrumbs that have a softer texture and are larger than the dried breadcrumbs. The difference is therefore in the texture. You can easily make these yourself by adding bread in a food processor. Grind the bread. You can use the crusts as usual. You also don’t have to use an oven to get rid of the moisture.

Dishes where you can use these breadcrumbs are:

Meatlof

Mac and Cheese

Panko

The third category is Panko. You’ve probably heard this name. This crumb originates in Japan. It is the crunchy coating used to fry food. Panko is made from bread baked by electric current. This sounds crazy, but doing this will not give you a crust. Then the bread is ground just like the other breadcrumbs. The texture is very airy and has the ability to absorb oil. This gives you a crispy layer.

Dishes where you can use these breadcrumbs are:

Fried Chicken

Fried Shrimps

Agedashi tofu

Tonkatsu

Plain Breadcrumbs

You can easily buy these in the supermarket. This is made from different types of bread and you can choose whether or not to have a crust. If we compare it to panko, this is a finer crumb. When you buy this in the store, it may be that herbs have been added.

Dishes where you can use these breadcrumbs are:

Meatballs

Chicken Schnitzel

Italian Breadcrumbs

Italian Breadcrumbs are plain breadcrumbs, as it were, only with herbs. This crumb consists of, among others, dries parsley, basil, oregano and thyme together with pepper, salt and some garlic powder.

Dishes where you can use these breadcrumbs are:

Italian Meatballs

When to use bread crumbs

You have probably used bread crumbs in different dishes. Depending on the type of breadcrumb, one dish works better than another. For example, I always use dried and fresh breadcrumbs in dishes with meat as a binding agent. An example could be a meatball. If you want to bread or fry meat, you can use panko for this. Panko is able to absorb oil, which gives you a crispy layer. You can also experiment with this yourself to see which crumb works best for you with which dish!

Storing bread crumbs

When you make breadcrumbs yourself, you have the option of storing them for a long time. You have to make sure that they are packed dry in an airtight container. Then you place the container in the freezer. I have never tested exactly how long you can store bread crumbs. If you keep it in the fridge, you have a few days.

Not a recipe today, but an instruction. You often see the fruit perfectly cut in the supermarket or in YouTube videos. If you see that, you want to try it yourself. A short instruction can have a big impact on your life! You only have to see it once and you won’t forget it for the rest of your life! Just follow the instructions and you’ll be done in no time! In this article, we’ll take a closer look at how to make cut a pineapple.

Selecting the right Pineapple

Before we go into the ”hacks” to cut a pineapple, it’s important that you select the right pineapple. If you look closely at a Pineapple, I can imagine that you think I will buy a container where the pineapple has already been cut into pieces. This is easier, but you will also notice it will cost more money. You cut a Pineapple in a few minutes. The first step is to make sure to select a ripe pineapple. If you buy a Pineapple in the supermarket between March and July, you can assume that they will be good immediately. This is the high season for this fruit.

Ripe Pineapple

If you want to be sure whether a pineapple is ripe, there are a number of parts that you can pay attention to. The first part is the leaves at the top. These must be green. If you see that the leaves are already a bit brown, I would recommend not to buy these. The color is also important for the pineapple itself. If the Pineapple itself is not yet very green, it is not yet ripe enough. If you like the color, the next step is to give the pineapple a quick squeeze.

When you gently squeeze the pineapple, you will notice that it can be pressed slightly. This is the signal that the pineapple is ripe. When you press / squeeze the fruit and it feels hard, the fruit is not yet ripe. The last part that I always pay attention to is the smell. Smell the Pineapple, if it’s a sweet scent, you know it’s good! You can buy this Pineapple safely!

Below a short summary to select the right pineapple:

Leaves on top needs to be green

The Pineapple looks yellow (not totally green)

You can press the pineapple a little bit

You can smell the sweet scent

Pineapple Cutting Hack

If you are searching for the right Pineapple Hack, you will see a lot of examples on YouTube. The post that went viral started with the removal of the leaves. You have to turn the leaves and you will find that you can easily pull them out. Then you roll the pineapple over harder soil. Try to apply some force. After rolling, you can simply press the pieces in with your thumb. You will notice that the yellow parts are easier than the green parts. I personally don’t think this is really a pineapple cutting hack. It actually takes too long. In addition, you will still need a knife to get everything loose. But you can always try! I’m curious about your comments!

How to cut a Pineapple in cubes

Below the step-by-step plan to cut a pineapple in cubes. This is the first method. The steps below are also further explained.

Cut the crown and bottom of the pineapple

Cut the pineapple in half (vertical)

Place your knife left and right to the middle and remove the center

Make two vertical cuts and five horizontal cuts

Place your knife blade tightly above the skin and move it downwards

I will explain the steps even further. The first thing you want to do is to remove the crown and the bottom. You could use the crown to grow another pineapple. More on this later. After removing the top and bottom, cut the Pineapple in half vertically. So you now have two halves where you can see the pulp. The middle now contains the core that you want to have removed. Place your knife to the left and right of the center and press diagonally to the back. Remove the core. Then do this with the other half as well. You will now have 4 pieces. Make two vertical cuts and five horizontal cuts in the pulp. Then place your knife on the pulp and move your knife to the back of the pineapple. The cuts will create the cubes! Watch the video below for the video instructions!

How to cut a Pineapple in Rings

The second method is to cut the pineapple in rings. Below the step-by-step plan to cut a pineapple in rings. The steps below are also further explained.

Cut the crown and bottom of the pineapple

Remove the skin of the pineapple

Remove the eyes

Put the pineapple on the side and cut vertical (choose the desired thickness)

Remove the core (knife or cookie cutter)

As with the first method, the first thing is to remove the head and bottom of the pineapple. Instead of cutting the pineapple in half, start by removing the skin. Make sure to remove as many eyes as possible. You can’t eat these. You can use a knife to remove it. It depends on how much skin you cut away, if that is too little you will notice that many eyes are still visible! When the eyes are all gone, place the pineapple on its side. Determine the thickness you want for the rings and you can start cutting. When you have cut the rings, you only have to remove the core. You can do this with a kitchen knife or with a cookie cutter if you have one!

How to store a Pineapple

So I told you two ways to cut your pineapple. You will see that you have quite a few cubes or rings. It is therefore important to know how to store them and for how long. It would be a shame to throw this delicious fruit away.

If you have leftovers, you can keep them in an airtight container in the refrigerator. I myself keep it for a maximum of 4 days. You have to keep an eye on this yourself how the color is, how it smells and tastes. I like a pineapple so much that it is usually completely finished after the 2nd day. You can also put the container in the freezer. It stays good here for months. How long have I never tested, but half a year must be feasible! If you have tested this, I am very curious about this! Let us know in the comments!

Grow a New Pineapple with the Crown

Everyone always throws away the crown. Still, it’s nice to save this time for your kids. You can get a new pineapple. This will take months and is not easy, but it is possible. Below the steps:

Remove the Crown from the top of the Pineapple

Remove the lower leaves and any flesh still attached to the crown

Place the Crown in a pot of water

Place the Crown in a pot of soil

So the first step is to remove the crown. When removed, there may be green leaves or flesh attached to the crown. You can remove these. You will notice that a dot / stem, don’t cut this away. Then place the stem in a pot of water. Place the pot in a warm place, but not in direct sunlight. I recommend changing the water every 3-4 days. When you notice a root you transfer the crown to a pot with soil. maintain the plant well and a new pineapple will slowly grow. This also depends on the correct temperature!

Everyone has to deal with it. Sugar is seen as a fattening agent. If you look at the labels of the products you buy, you will notice that so many products contain sugar. You can be shocked by the amount, but also by the other sweeteners if it does not literally say sugar. Because of this, it seemed useful to write a knowledge base article about sugar detox tips. To be clear, I am not an expert in the field of good nutrition, but I can give you tips based on literature found and my own experience.

What is the definition of Sugar Detox

The meaning of Sugar Detox is:

”Detox is the term that stands for cleaning your body of waste products or toxins. In this case, it is about removing simple sugars from your daily diet. This with the aim of living a healthier life and greatly reducing your sugar intake”.

Sugar Addicted

Sugar is addictive, it appears to be many times more addictive than cocaine. That is not surprising. Once you have had, you often want more and more. Take a look at your own life. What do you drink in a day? If I take myself as an example, I used to drink tea with sugar throughout the day. In the evening I had a glass of soft drink and this was also the case at the weekend. Today it is mainly water.

The effect of quitting sugar in your drink will make a difference. Try drinking coffee without sugar or just grabbing a glass of water. Avoid all fruit juices and soft drinks as well, but just grab a glass of water.

Taking too much sugar goes hand in hand with obesity and many well-known diseases including: cancer, dementia, heart disease and diabetes. Of course we can mention more, but these are the most important ones. Sugar intake differs per country. According to the WHO, it is recommended to consume less than 50 grams of sugar per day. Below the top 20 countries with sugar intake:

United States (126 grams per person)

Germany (102.9 grams per person)

Netherlands (102.5 grams per person)

Ireland (96.7 grams per person)

Australia (95.6 grams per person)

Belgium (95 grams per person)

United Kingdom (93.2 grams per person)

Mexico (92.5 grams per person)

Finland (91.5 grams per person)

Canada (89.1 grams per person)

Austria (88.1 grams per person)

Sweden (86.1 grams per person)

Norway (83.1 grams per person)

New Zealand (82.9 grams per person)

South Africa (41.5 grams per person)

South Korea (30.8 grams per person)

Russia (20 grams per person)

Egypt (19.5 grams per person)

Israel (14.5 grams per person)

India (5.1 grams per person)

There is a lot of room for improvement as you can see.

Added Sugars

When products have an expression that there is little or no sugar in them. Then it may also be that it contains added sugars. These are sugars or syrups that are added to food when it is being prepared. A common question is does this also include sugar from fruit? The answer is no. This does not belong to the added sugars. These added sugars can go by different names:

Brown Sugar

Corn Syrup

Fructose

Glucose

Maltose

Dextrose

Molasses

Sucrose

And we can actually name more like that. We can briefly conclude that most people, probably unconsciously, ingest too much sugar. So it is time to do something about this. Like any addiction, it takes a while for your body to get used to it. It is time to take the first steps towards a sugar detox.

How to start a Sugar Detox

Like any other goal you have in life, it must come from within yourself. You want to achieve certain parts in life so you will have to stand behind it yourself. You have to guess to yourself why you want this at all. If someone else tells you to do it and you don’t support it, then you have to be honest with yourself. Then don’t do it. May sound like really bad advice, but you can make the change. An other person can’t do that for you. They can help and support you where necessary, but the first step starts with yourself.

You must be willing to break your own sugar pattern. This pattern has been crafted in you for years and has become automatic. It must be broken and changed. If you succeed, you will notice that it is not that difficult at all. It takes a real willingness to change. To help you on your way, I have listed the top 10 sugar detox tips for you. There are many more tips in this area, only for me these are the most valuable!

Top 10 Sugar Detox Tips

Below you can find the top 10 sugar detox tips:

Start small

Drink more water

Look out for hidden sugars

Monitor your stress

Sleep Enough

Remove all the junk food

Prepare your meals

Healthy snacks

Eat your carbs and protein

Change your habits

Below you can find the detailed explanation.

Detailed Explanation Top 10 Sugar detox Tips

Start Small

It’s not possible for everyone to go cold turkey, so quit most sugar altogether. You can start by taking the first step. Remove all your sugar products and replace them with natural ones. If you normally put sugar in your tea, now use real honey. Find out for yourself which small step you can take first.

Drink more water

One of the first steps you can take is to check for yourself what you drink all day. I am not a good example here, as I never drink coffee or tea. I drink water all day long, even when I eat. At the weekend I still want to drink often soft drinks. If you often drink a beer on the weekend, then this is of course no problem. The real summer beers often contain sugar, which is sweeter in taste. If you usually drink high percentage alcohol drinks on the weekend, check out the soda you mix it with. Are there options to reduce the sugar in this? Vodka water is an option.

Look out for hidden sugars

If you are a real coffee drinker, avoid the cake or cookie that goes with it. Look for a healthier alternative. You will be surprised at how many hidden sugars you eat throughout the day. An example could be chewing gum or a cup of soup, but you will also find a lot of sugars in many ready-made products. I therefore advise you to check what the label contains. In addition, fresh products are always better, it can be a bit more expensive. But you will have to calculate what the differences are in a week.

Monitor your stress

One of the most important things is changing your regular pattern. By removing most of the sugars from your home, you will also not be more likely to switch to eating products with a lot of sugar. Another tip is to pay attention to your stress levels. If you experience a lot of stress, you may naturally look for food with sugar in it. Eating food with sugar can increase the serotonin product. This has a calming effect and lowers your stress level. When you are under a lot of stress I advise you to go outside and walk around. Clear your mind and enjoy the things around you.

Sleep Enough

Maybe you recognize it in yourself. You slept badly and know that you don’t have the right energy to get through the day. You often take a cup of coffee with extra sugar to get a lot of energy. To prevent this, it is all the more important that you get enough sleep. This is different for every person. Some people have a lot of energy after 6 hours of sleep, while others need a minimum of 7.5 hours of sleep.

Remove all junk food

Stop eating junk food or make the food yourself only a healthier variation. Depending on the junk food you take it will contains a lot of sugar or a lot of fat. By eating low-sugar products in combination with healthy fats you ensure your blood sugar level remains stable. By good fats we mean, among other things, nuts and avocados for example.

Prepare your meals

If you really want to break your pattern, make sure you already prepare your meals. You can interpret this in two ways. The first way is to plan in advance what to eat. So you know what you need to have and you will not encounter surprises. The second possibility is that you are already preparing the food, you only have to heat it up. My preference is for the first way. If I prepare food in advance, I always heat it up later in a pan on the gas. I never use the microwave for this.

Healthy Snacks

When do you notice that you are most in need of a snack? This is often towards the end of the working day. In order not to fall into your old pattern, I advise you to bring a healthy snack to work. You can make this healthy snack yourself. Healthy snacks are for example: protein loaf, homemade energy bars, granola bars, avocado with crackers, hummus & veggies, nuts mix, salad without sauce or some fruit for example.

Eat your carbs and protein

Make sure your meals containing a lot of carbs and protein. For carbs you need to take the right carbs. You can find these carbs in vegetables. Examples are mushrooms, onions, peppers, eggplant or other green vegetables. Whole grains are also included. Avoid potatoes and bread. With pasta it depends on the pasta type. The protein can be obtained from fish, chicken and meat. With meat I would avoid the red meat. You can also look up the calories of the cut of meat on the internet or on the label itself. That way you know exactly what the meat contains.

Change your habits

All these points above are nice. You can see it as another list of 10 tips. Ultimately, you have to change if you take in too much sugar. Not another. You have to make the choice and support it 100%. You can go full turkey right away or take it easy as long as there is a change. Change your patterns and think consciously about the choices you make. For example, why do you always drink so much soda? Is it normal or do you really like it that much? If it is a habit, you can learn another habit. If you really like it, you can look for something that is just as tasty, but a lot healthier. This way you are working every day to make yourself aware of reducing your sugar intake.

The above 10 tips should give you the tools to start your sugar detox. The road will not be easy, but it is a good first step. Ultimately, you decide whether you are going to succeed in this or not. And remember this well: every step is one. As long as you keep giving that one small step, you will move forward!

What are Crème Caramel and Flan

When I can get to order a Dessert, that feeling is amazing. It’s the best dish when you are going to eat in a restaurant. Or that’s my opinion! Crème Caramel and Flan are both desserts. Both desserts have a nice layer of caramel on top. Before we go through the differences, let’s first discuss each dish substantively.

What is Créme Caramel

This is the most famous dessert of the two if you live in a non Spanish speaking countries. It’s a dessert originally from France: a custard pudding with a layer of caramel. The sugar is melted with water in a saucepan. Heating the sugar will cause it to caramelize. When the color is good, add a little more water. Add the caramel to the ramekins. After this you only have to make the custard.

You can easily make custard by heating heavy cream and milk in a sauce pan. A little steam should come off this. Then mix eggs and sugar together with a little vanilla extract in a bowl. Mix everything together well. When the sugar is completely dissolved you can add the milk to the eggs. You do this little by little. This way you ensure that the eggs can slowly come to temperature. If you do this too quickly, the eggs may heat up too quickly. This creates scrambled eggs.

Once everything has been added, strain the mixture and add it to the ramekins. You then only have to bake the ramekins at 150 degrees Celsius for 40 minutes in a tray with hot water. Then let them cool down completely. It is now time to turn the ramekins over. If they don’t come off in one go, gently run a knife around the edges. If you turn the ramekin over now, you will see that it comes off completely. The caramel will come over the edge and you have a fantastic dessert!

Créme Caramel consist of a France word, créme. Other names for this dish are:

Créme renverséé (French)

Crema volteada (Spanish)

Caramel custard (Malaysia)

Bánh caramel (Vietnam)

What is Flan

You don’t need to confuse flan with créme caramel. Flan is also known with the name flan de leche. It’s a dish with a sponge base pastry that contains a filling that can be ether sweet or savory.

Flan can be eaten as a main dish if you have a savory filling, but also as a dessert with the sweet filling. This dish has a great history with originated during the Roman Empire. It’s a typical Roman Cuisine. It’s common to the dish is served cold. The dish has been very popular in Spain for years. And that’s where the big difference actually arises. In countries where Spanish is spoken and in America, Flan is really popular. When you talk about the name Flan outside of these countries, you often end up with a dish that resembles a quiche.

The biggest differences are in 5 parts: definition, structure, origin, ingredients, how and when to serve. The structure of the flan is somewhat spongy, while the creme caramel looks like a pudding. Creme Caramel is originally from France and Flan from Italy.

In addition, flan can consist of a sweet or savory filling. This savory filling also makes it very suitable as a main dish, while creme caramel really is a pure dessert. Creme Caramel can be served hot or cold while flan is always served cold. Hopefully, because of these differences, you will never make the mistake of creme caramel vs flan again!

We were having breakfast in a hotel and there was a nice slice of bread. It was a little bit darker than usual, but otherwise it looked good. After eating a bite I knew enough. This was not normal bread, but sourdough bread. In this new knowledge base article I’m going to talk about what you can make with Sourdough Starter.

What is Sourdough Starter

Everyone knows Sourdough bread. It’s made by the fermentation of dough. The sour taste of the bread is produced by naturally occurring lactobacilli and yeast. The lactic acid gives the sour taste.

But then the big question is: what is Sourdough Starter? This is the starting product used to make sourdough bread. You can make this by combining flour and water. This will ferment and bacteria will develop. As mentioned above, the bacteria that are developed give the sour taste. This is also where the name of the bread comes from. This may sound strange but you should also feed your sourdough starter. You are dealing with microorganisms that are alive. They need food to keep them alive. This consists of a combination of flour and water. You add this once a week. After feeding you can simply keep it in the refrigerator again.

One of my favorite dishes is pasta carbonara. I actually like everything with pasta. You have so many pasta types. Whether it concerns spaghetti noodles, Fettuccini, linguine, pappardelle or tagliatelle, the different textures give so much more than just a bunch of strings. Cooking is one of the most important parts of pasta. Of course you want pasta to be cooked properly, but how do you actually do that? In this article, we’ll take a closer look at how to cook pasta.

What is the definition of Cooking Pasta

The meaning of cooking pasta is:

”Before you can eat pasta, you have to cook it until it is done. You bring pasta to a boil in a pan with water and salt”.

Cooking Pasta

Cooking pasta is actually not that difficult. You just have to know exactly what to do and you will always cook the perfect pasta. However, when you are cooking pasta there are a few rules that will apply every time.

You may not have heard of these rules, but they should give you exactly the guidance you need. The rules are as follows:

Always add salt to the water

Use the measure of 75 grams of pasta per person

To make the water boil faster, put a lid on the pan. Remove this afterwards if it has started cooking.

Always use a large pan for the pasta with a lot of water

Do not put the pasta in the pan until the water is boiling

These are the basic rules of pasta cooking. You will always have to apply these rules and you will be well on your way to making the perfect pasta.

Best Way to Cook Pasta

You now know the rules before cooking the pasta. Now I’m going to tell you the steps that you need to take for the perfect pasta every time:

Place a large pan on the stove and fill it with water

Add a good amount of salt and put a lid on the pan

Bring the water to a boil

Remove the lid from the pan and add the pasta

How long you have to cook the pasta is indicated on the package. Try to taste the pasta 1 minute before the pasta can come out.

Before you drain the pasta make sure to keep some pasta water aside for the sauce.

Drain the pasta. You can now mix the pasta with the sauce

These steps probably sound quite logical. What you should not forget is step 6. Just think to yourself, how often have you kept pasta water aside for the sauce? If you make pasta carbonara, you need pasta water. It has happened to me a number of times that you quickly pour off all the pasta and then think: I needed that for the sauce. Usually some pasta water will remain in the pan. If you use a colander, you will of course lose everything.

Another important tip that I think will help you. Do you ever rinse your pasta with cold water if you want to use it for a salad? Never do that again. This is bad for the pasta. The pasta contains a starch layer. If you have a sauce, it will stick to the starch layer. Instead of rinsing the pasta, the best tip is to add olive oil and mix it together. Stop rinsing your pasta!

When you are going to cook or bake you need equipment. This can be molds for cakes or cupcakes, for example. If you don’t use molds, because you want to make cookies, you need baking paper. This is because baking paper prevents the cookies from sticking to the plate. A frequently asked question in my inbox is whether you can also use wax paper to bake cookies. It is right time to write a knowledge base article about this subject. In this new knowledge base article we’ll take a closer look at: can you bake cookies on wax paper.

What is Wax Paper

The name says it all, wax paper, also called paraffin paper, is a type of paper that has been treated with wax. It’s a smooth surface. Because this surface has been treated, no products will stick to the paper. So can use this paper for baking. If you need a dish that requires grease proof paper, you can use this paper. This paper can start smoking when the temperature in the oven is really hot. Do you have a recipe that requires a low temperature, then this paper is perfect. If you want to pack food, you can also use this paper.

Important advice: if you have a recipes that require high temperatures, you need to use parchment paper. This paper does not smoke at high temperatures.

Wax Paper and Microwave

Wax paper is therefore not very convenient to use in an oven, unless it is low temperatures. If the temperatures get too high, the paper can smoke or even catch fire. It is the wax layer that creates this smoke. You can use the wax paper well in a microwave. This way you can collect splashes. The second advantage is that the paper in a microwave does not get very hot. This will also prevent it from smoking.

Difference between Parchment Paper and Wax Paper

Both papers are non-stick. The big difference is made in the heat that the paper can handle. A Parchment Paper is suitable for recipes that require high temperatures. This can be, for example, baking cookies. Wax Paper is not suitable for these recipes. The problem arises that the wax layer of the paper can burn at high temperatures. This creates smoke. The last thing you want is smoke in your oven when you’re just making some treats. The wax paper is more suitable for catching splashes and wrapping food.

So the answer on the question: Can you bake Cookies on Wax Paper is unfortunate no. You need to bake the cookies at a high temperature which can cause smoke, because of the wax layer. Always use parchment paper for cookies that you have to bake at a high temperature.

When I was still living with my parents (some time ago) it was a habit that all food was always eaten. Now you think this sounds very logical, because that’s how it should be with food. But you may remember the first months that you lived on your own. You bought food and it often came out to me that I could throw it away. I boiled to much potatoes for 2 persons. You cannot store every vegetable, fruit or pasta indefinitely. Today I want to talk about storing a Fondant Cake. In this new knowledge base article we’ll take a closer look at how to store Fondant Cake.

Fondant Cake

What is a Fondant Cake

You probably recognize the biggest cakes. Cakes that are used on television or, for example, for weddings or large parties. These cakes have a kind of icing over them.
We call it Fondant. But what is fondant really? Fondant can be used as a filling for bonbons, but also in icing form. It is used to decorate cakes, puffs, pastries and marzipan, among other things. You can make the craziest things with fondant.

Like the most things you can make fondant yourself. You cook sugar, water and glucose and then you can add dyes or other ingredients yourself. Fondant has all different colors. If you want to buy Fondant, you can go to a supermarket. They will have fondant in the different colors.

Expiration date Fondant

When you buy a cake with fondant you will always keep it refrigerated. You notice that the moment you take the fondant cake out of the fridge and just leave it at room temperature, the fondant becomes weaker. Cracks can form after a long period. If you buy fondant yourself but have not used it for a while, it can remain good for a long time. When it comes to the expiration date, you can check a number of things to see if it is still good. Always keep the fondant unopened in a cool place.

The first check you can do is see if the fondant is still soft and flexible. If this is the case, you should check if there are stains on the fondant. If there are stains on the fondant, you can throw it away. In addition, you can always taste the fondant. You can also smell the fondant, if the smell is not good, throw it away immediately. You can also look at the color of the fondant. When the color of the fondant has changed, the best option is to throw it away. However, the color can last for over a year.

Storing Fondant

The most important thing is to make sure that the fondant is well preserved. If you don’t do this, you need to follow the early mentioned points to see if it can still be used.

Like many products, your fondant is best kept in a airtight bag. When you buy fondant there is often a plastic bag around it. You can use this. Place the bag with fondant in a dark place, but especially a cool place. Make sure no light can reach the bag. If light does get to the fondant, there is a possibility that the color will change. If you only want to make a cake for decoration to put the most beautiful photo on Instagram or Facebook, you can of course use fondant which is no longer good. As long as you don’t eat it.

If you have stored the fondant in a dry place and out of reach of light, it may still feel a bit hard after some time. You can use the microwave to make the fondant slightly softer. Set the microwave on a setting with low wattage numbers. Leave the fondant in the microwave for 10 seconds. Then see if it is more malleable. If you find that this is still difficult, you can always put it in the microwave for an extra 10 seconds. You will notice that you can knead the fondant smoothly again. It is important that you do not keep the fondant in the microwave for too long. If you feel that the fondant contains some heat, it should actually be enough.

Steps before boiling

Peel the potatoes with a paring knife

Cut the potatoes into pieces

Wash the potatoes before putting in a pan

Fill a pan with water

Add the potatoes

Add a little bit of salt to the water

Turn on the gas on medium heat

Cook the potatoes for 20 minutes

Sieve the potatoes

Serve the potatoes

Can you boil all potatoes

Potatoes come in different shapes and sizes. Depending on where you live, you also have other brands. We can distinguish two types of potatoes:

Waxy potatoes

Crumbling potatoes

Potatoes that fall under waxy are: Nicola, Bildstar, Opperdoeze Ronde, Russet Potato. Crumbling potatoes are: Eigenheimer, Bintje and Gloria. Each type has its own cooking method. I will explain this further below.

Waxy potatoes Boiling

Waxy potatoes, in for example the Netherlands also known as ”Vasthoudende Aardappelen”, can be small potatoes with a light skin. These retain their shape with cooking or baking because they have a low starch content and a high moisture content. These are the types of potatoes that you completely submerge when cooking. You fill the pan with water so that the potatoes remain under water. Then you cook the potatoes on medium gas. How long to boil these potatoes? It takes about 20 minutes before they are cooked. To check if they are done, prick a potato with a fork. If your fork goes in easily, the potatoes are done. If you notice that there is resistance, the potatoes have to cook even longer. When they are cooked, turn the gas on low for an additional 2 minutes. Then drain the potatoes and use them for your recipe.

Waxy potatoes

Crumbling potatoes boiling

The second type are crumbling potatoes. For this type you don’t have to fill the pan completely with water. Often used as standard thumb height or half-height water. The problem is that if you use too much water, the potatoes can get mushy. How long to boil these potatoes? You can also cook these potatoes in 15 to 20 minutes. To check if the potatoes are good, you also prick the potato with your fork. If you go through them easily, they are good. If it’s stiff, you have to cook them a little longer. It’s important that you keep an eye on it. So if you cook them for too long they can get mushy and that is a shame.

A tip for cooking them perfectly: if they really need an extra minute before they are cooked, drain the potatoes and let them steam. Before serving them, shake off the last bit of water. You will notice that there will be crumbs from the potatoes on the edges of the pan. That’s how they are perfect!

For both types you can choose to peel them or leave the skin on. The time remains the same, the most important thing is that the potatoes are the same size. This to ensure that the pieces are cooked equal.

How long to boil potatoes

Depending on how big you cut the potatoes and the type of potatoes, boiling potatoes is around the numbers below:

Waxy potatoes: 20 minutes

Crumbling potatoes: 15 – 20 minutes

Make sure the potato pieces are always the same size. It doesn’t have to be perfect, but if you have a lot of large potatoes and a few small ones, the small ones will be cooked much earlier than the large ones. If you choose for whole potatoes it takes around the 40 to 60 minutes before they are fully cooked.
