What is the definition of Caramel Popcorn

The meaning of Caramel Popcorn is:

”A snack that is made with butter, caramelized sugar, popped corn and vegetable oil. If you like salt Popcorn you can add some salt”.

The first time I ate Caramel Popcorn was in a movie theater. Once you have eaten this, you also want to make it yourself, because it is so tasty! Caramel Popcorn is also called Caramel corn. As the name suggests, it is popcorn that is topped with caramel. This can be made by means of a sugar solution or a syrup that is heated. The syrup will then turn brown and thicker, making it perfect to use.

The history of this dish goes back to the end of the 18th century. Depending on where you live, caramel corn can be very popular. In the United States, there are many different brands that offer this. The best known brands are Cracker Jack, Crunch n ‘Munch and Fiddle Faddle. If I miss a major brand, please let me know! You can buy this snack in cinemas or supermarkets. There are even some companies that really specialize in making and selling this snack. An example of this is the company Nuts on Clark. Americans love this snack!

History of Popcorn Caramel

The inventors of this snack are two Germans. This concerns the brothers Rueckheim. These brothers moved from Germany to America and went to live in Chicago. This is also the first place where they opened their shop in 1870. The store was known for experimenting with new possible flavors. The first big hit that the brothers scored was with peanuts and molasses. The story goes that a customer shouted through the store That’s a crackerjack. If your not from the United States, that’s a typical phrase to let someone know that the quality is good. Years later in 1896, this name was also recorded and the popcorn was sold from this name.

Caramel Popcorn Recipe

The Caramel Popcorn recipe is really easy. You need a couple of ingredients: corn, sugar, butter, vegetable oil and water.

The first thing you need to do is put a pan on medium heat with vegetable oil. When the pan is getting warm, you can add the corn. You can test it with one corn. Put the corn in the pan and see what happens, when you see and hear sizzling you can add the rest. Don’t forget to put a lid on it. I recommend to use a lid of glass. This ensures that you can see how much corn has already popped and how much still has to pop.

When the popcorn is heating up, you can already start with making the caramel. Caramel is not very difficult to make. You just have to keep paying close attention. Grab a saucepan and put it on the gas on medium heat. If you have an induction hob, you can use settings 8 till 10. You add the sugar and water and then you have to wait. You will notice that the caramel will change color. It is important not to let it get too dark. I did make this mistake this time. It is not necessarily bad, only the taste of the caramel will be somewhat bitter. When you think the color is right, add a knob of butter. Stir well and turn off the heat.

The next step is to place the popcorn in a bowl. I first used a sieve so that the non-popped popcorn stayed on the bottom. You can also choose not to use a sieve and replace the bowl with a baking tray. Lay out a baking paper and then add the popcorn. Pour the caramel over the popcorn and mix everything together. The Popcorn caramel is ready!

Cleaning Caramel

Important: One more tip regarding cleaning caramel. Your saucepan may be a little on the dark side. If you are going to clean this with soap and water you will notice that this will not go away. What I recommend is to add a dishwashing block to the pan with a layer of water. Then put the pan on the gas on medium heat. Let it boil. You will notice that the caramel layer will slowly come off. You may have to repeat this 1 or 2 times! Don’t panic, it can always be cleaned, sometimes it just takes a while!

How to make Caramel Popcorn

  1. Start with getting a pan with a lid. Add 15 milliliters of vegetable oil on medium heat.
  2. When the pan is hot, add 90 grams of popcorn to the pan. Put the glass lid on top.
  3. To make the caramel add 210 grams of sugar and 100 milliliters of water to the sauce pan on medium heat.
  4. When 90% of the corn kernels are popped into popcorn use a sieve to divide the popcorn from the kernels. Add the popcorn to a mixing bowl.
  5. When the caramel turns golden add 15 grams of butter. Stir gently and turn of the heat.
  6. Pour the caramel over the popcorn and mix everything. Enjoy this amazing recipe!

  • The first step is to get a pan with a glass lid. Add the 15 ml of vegetable oil on medium heat.
  • When the oil is hot add the 90 grams of corn to the pan. Put the lid on top.
  • The next step is to make the caramel. Add 210 grams of sugar and 100 ml of water to a sauce pan on medium heat.
  • Wait until the caramel turns brown and add the 15 grams of butter.
  • Stir gently and turn of the heat.
  • When most of the popcorn is done sieve the popcorn from the kernels.
  • Pour the caramel over the popcorn and mix everything together. Enjoy the amazing Caramel Popcorn!
