A main course does not have to be difficult. Sometimes I find myself looking at what’s in the fridge and turning it into a great dish. One of the components that often prevents you from making a dish is spices. For some dishes you need a lot of spices. You can easily buy these spices in the store, but it can just be the threshold to make a dish. You also need a number of spices for this dish in combination with chicken. Today i’m talking about Harissa Chicken. In this article, we’ll take a closer look at how to make Harissa Chicken.

What is the definition of Harissa Chicken

The meaning of Harissa Chicken is:

”Harissa is a hot red sauce, that you can make with peppers, tomato’s, cumin, coriander, olive oil and garlic. This sauce is marinated with chicken and served with white rice”.

Harissa Chicken

Harissa is therefore a sauce that resembles sambal or chili sauce. This sauce is mainly used in North African countries. It is not only used in combination with meat, but also for soups, rice dishes and pasta dishes.

The sauce is therefore originally from North Africa. The sauce was brought to Spain via Tunisia, which also gave it its fame in Europe. Tunisia is known for producing Harissa. The sauce is available in jars, cans, bottles and tubes. This sauce is probably the most famous sauce in Tunisia. It’s a typical feature of Algerian cuisine where it is used for both meat and fish dishes. Below is a small list of possible dishes with this sauce:

  • Couscous
  • Meat
  • Rub for vegetables
  • Tangines
  • Sabich
  • Chicken Shawarma
  • Yemeni Sahawiq
  • Amba

Making Harissa Chicken

Making this dish doesn’t take much time and effort. You can make this in 15 minutes. But in order not to put pressure on it, 20 minutes should also work. The first step you will make is cutting the chicken. Here you cut the chicken into pieces. The next step is to put the chicken in a bowl and then add the spices. You stir the spices and the chicken together. The seasoning should be absorbed by the chicken, so I recommend putting the bowl with the chicken in the fridge at night. This way you get the best result. Then it is a matter of baking the chicken.

I serve white rice with this dish. You can also choose to serve something else with it. This can be bread, but also a salad or perhaps chips. You can make it as crazy as you want. Ultimately, you have to eat the food, so you have to cook what you like! Below again the steps for making Harissa Chicken in a step-by-step plan:

  1. Cutting the chicken
  2. Put the chicken in a bowl with the spices
  3. Mix everything together
  4. Put the bowl with chicken in the fridge overnight
  5. Bake the chicken
  6. Cooking the rice
  7. Enjoy your meal!

Ingredients
  

  • 750 grams Chicken Breast
  • 300 grams White Rice
  • 30 ml Olive Oil
  • 30 grams Harissa Paste
  • 3 gloves Garlic
  • 3 grams Pepper
  • 3 grams Salt
  • 5 grams Smoked Paprika
  • 5 grams Cumin

Instructions
 

  • The first step is to take a bowl and cut the chicken into pieces.
  • Put the chicken pieces in the bowl.
  • Add the spices to the bowl.
  • Mix everything together.
  • Add foil on top of the bowl and put it overnight in the fridge.
  • Take the bowl out of the fridge. Grab a pan and add some butter / oil in the pan.
  • Bake the chicken for 10-12 minutes. Until they are done!
  • Fill a pan with water and add the rice. Cook the rice until done!
  • Serve the Harissa Chicken with the rice! Enjoy your meal.

Notes

  • Optional: use lime juice to serve it with the chicken. This will give the chicken an extra taste.
