If you look at typical winter dishes, a country in the world really stands out: the Netherlands. From stewed pears, sauerkraut, but also Hutspot. What is the definition of Dutch Hutspot
The meaning of Dutch Hutspot is:

Maybe you have never heard of this dish, but if you are a resident of the Netherlands you do not know better in the winter period. Hutspot and sauerkraut are typical winter dishes. I am not a fan of sauerkraut, but I can eat Hutspot every day! It is a great dish that is also easy to make. You can eat it with different types of meat. Do you choose chicken, bacon or do you go for a meatball? No problem, everything is possible.
When I always ate Hutspot at home, we had as meat a meatball or braising steak. Both combinations were so delicious! Whenever the food was finished, you were already looking forward to the next time you could eat this amazing dish! In the winter period this was once every 2 to 3 weeks.
The name of the dish is called Hotchpot in English and hochepot in French. The taste of Hutspot is mainly made by the type of carrot that is used. This concerns the winter carrot. It’s a specific flavor, to which everyone recognizes Hutspot.
Dutch Hutspot Recipe
Making Hutspot is actually quite simple. I will explain it in detail here. You start by peeling your potatoes. It is recommended to opt for potatoes that are slightly crumbly. After peeling the potatoes, cut them into cubes. The easiest way is to put them through the length first and then through the width. Once you have peeled and diced all the potatoes, it is time for the carrots. Scrape these clean with a knife and then cut them into cubes. After the carrots it is time for the onions. Peel the onions and cut them into half rings. If you want to cut them in a different shape, this is of course also possible.
Once you have cut the main ingredients, take a large pan and put the potatoes in one pan. In the other pan put the carrots and onion. Make sure the potatoes are under the water and add the salt. After this you add the water. Make sure to add just as much water so that the ingredients are just under water. Then add some salt. This can be 2 to 3 grams, also known as a pinch. You can add a little water to the carrots and onions. With the carrots and onion you can add some bay leaf, pepper, ketjap and a bouillon cube.
Use two pans
Everything is in two separate pans, it’s time to bring it to a boil. When it’s boiling, turn the gas back to low heat. Now let it sit on a low heat for 25-30 minutes. Put the lid on. This way the potatoes and carrots are nicely cooked. After the 25-30 minutes it is time to drain both pans. When all the water is out, cook the potatoes dry for 1 or 2 minutes on low heat. After that you can take a potato masher. It is high time to thoroughly mash the potatoes, carrots and onions together. Now you have the choice of whether you want a smooth Hutspot or a Hutspot that can contain bits. You have to do what you like best. pepper and salt. Have you added everything, taste it and see if you might need to add some pepper.
I have not described meat with this recipe. Do you want to serve it with meatballs, chicken or another piece of meat! Take that into account with the preparation!
