Bread is eaten in almost every country. The shapes can differ per country. France is known for its baguettes. In the Netherlands, breakfast is often served with bread, with all kinds of sweetness being spread on the bread, such as ”Hagelslag” or ”Vlokken”. Another well-known sandwich is a Bagel. The question I got is How long do bagels last. In this knowledge base article I will answer this question.
Everyone recognizes a bagel. It’s a sandwich with a circle in it. It looks like donuts. The origin of the bread can be traced back to Poland. Immigrants from Poland, in search of a better life, have introduced the bread to the United States. It became especially popular in New York. This was the city where the Polish settled. In New York, stores were closed on Sundays, except in the Jewish neighborhoods. The Jewish Bakers were open. The bagels were sold well there. Another word for Bagel is beygl or bajgiel.
The big difference between the bagel and donuts is that the bagel is not fried. The bagel is a lot healthier! It is also not baked in butter, but immersed in boiling water. After they are submerged, you can rub them with butter and they are baked. The bagel is a heavy bun. Which is usually cut in half where it can be topped. A traditional bagel consists of cream cheese, smoked salmon and onion.
How to keep bagels Fresh
One of the frustrations I have with cookies, bread, and in this case bagels, is that they get stale. There is no greater frustration. If you don’t have time to eat your bagel right away, you don’t have to worry about this. It takes a while for a bagel to be stale.
Still, it would be useful if you had some tips & tricks for yourself to ensure that this moment is postponed as far as possible. I have three options for you to to keep the bagels fresh:
- Sealed Plastic Bag
The first option for how to keep bagels fresh is a sealed plastic bag. You may not be able to eat the bagel right away. Which I do recommend if you have a topped bagel to remove the topping. You can also try not to, but I don’t know how a slice of ham reacts when it’s in a plastic bag for 4-5 days. When you put the bagel in the sealed plastic bag, make sure there is no air left. This way you ensure that it lasts longer. How much longer the bagel will last is a good question. I must owe you the exact answer, as it can vary greatly for each bagel. Assume at least 1 to 2 days. You can leave the bagels on room temperature.
The second option you have for keeping your bagels fresh is to put them in the fridge. You also need a sealed plastic bag for this. Make sure there is no air in the bag again. Then put the bag in the fridge. Here you can leave it for 3 to 4 days.
The third option you have is to put the bagel in the freezer. This is the option where the bagel will last the longest. Here you can leave it in for months and then you can still eat it. An important point is that you should not assume that it is just as fresh after thawing as it was put in. If it looks like it is a bit stale, you can always put it in the oven or in a roaster to make it crispy. The question is whether you want to wait months to eat a bagel. I can tell you the answer for myself: absolutely not! I just want to enjoy the bagel right away.
So how long will bagels last depends on the option you will choose:
- Plastic bag: 1 to 2 days
- Refrigerator: 3 tot 4 days
- Freezer: months
