Today there is another snack on the program. When I can almost celebrate the weekend, I personally enjoy watching a good documentary in the evening with a snack. This often involves potato chips. After eating this myself for years, I finally came up with the idea to make this myself. It’s easier than you think and the result is really good. In this article, we’ll take a closer look at how to make Paprika Chips.

What is the definition of Paprika Chips

The meaning of Paprika Chips is:

”Paprika flavored Chips, also known as crisp or potato chips. The potato chips consist of thin slices of potato that have been deep fried until they become crunchy”.

Depending on where you live, Paprika Chips may or may not be popular. If you live in the Netherlands, Belgium or Germany, these chips must be extremely popular. There are several brands that have marketed the paprika chips. Some of these brands are:

  • Croky
  • Kettle
  • Lays
  • Pringles
  • Tyrrells

A small history lesson. The first known recipe where potato chips were used was in 1817. The recipe was published in the book “The Cook’s Oracle”. The first American recipe appeared in 1824. Nowadays it is impossible to imagine the supermarkets without it. Mass production increased the reputation of the chips. The oldest potato company in the United States is from 1910, the Mikesell’s Potato Chips Company.

Over the years, more and more different flavors have been added to the shops. For example, one of the first flavors, next to natural chips, was Cheese & Onion and Salt & Vinegar. One of the first flavors to be sold in America was with BBQ flavor. This was between years 1954 and 1958. Read on for the Paprika Chips recipe.

Paprika Chips Recipe

This snack recipe is so easy. You need the following ingredients: potatoes, paprika powder, salt and frying oil. Optional is some chili powder.

The first thing you need to do is clean the potatoes with some water. After cleaning them it’s time to peel the potatoes. You can decide to leave the skin on if you want. I prefer to remove the skin. For this recipe you need to slice the potatoes as thin as possible. I highly recommend to use a mandoline slicer. You can slice the potato with a knife, but a mandoline slicer will give you the best result. Slice the potatoes as thin as possible.

After slicing them give the chips an ice bath for a minimum of 4 minutes. After the 4 minutes dry the chips with a towel. It’s time to put a pan on the stove and add the pan with frying oil. When the oil is hot you can start frying the chips. Important note, make sure the oil isn’t to hot. If the oil is to hot you will notice that the chips is turning brown really quick.

After frying the chips you transfer them to a plate with a paper towel to remove the excess oil. If you are not satisfied with the crispiness you can fry them a second them. And repeat the process. Add the chips in a bowl and start adding salt and paprika powder. After adding the ingredients taste the chips. You can choose to add more paprika after tasting! Enjoy this amazing chips!

Notes

  • Make sure to use a mandoline slicer to get the most thin potatoes. How thinner the potato how better the end result.
  • Make sure the oil isn't to hot, otherwise the chips can get a brown color really quick.
