History of the Pancake

I always find it interesting to know where the dish actually comes from. Pancakes are really Dutch pride, but does the original come from the Netherlands? After a long search I found something about the history. The first mentions of the pancakes do not come from the Netherlands, but from China and Nepal. It was taken to Europe around the 12th century. The main ingredient then was buckwheat. Buckwheat cultivation in Europe took place around the 13th century in the Netherlands and Belgium. An old recipe for making pancakes showed that the ingredients list consisted of: buckwheat, water, milk, melted butter, eggs and a little flour. The ingredients were mixed well together to get a batter. Then the batter was baked. Yet there is a bit of a difference with today’s Dutch Pancake.

Dutch Pancakes Recipe

A Dutch Pancakes recipe is so easy: you need 5 ingredients: eggs, milk, flour and sugar. For baking you use some butter. First you start with adding the eggs in a bowl. Start mixing the eggs. After mixing you add the milk and the flour. Mix everything together. You will get a smooth batter. The texture is something thicker than milk. I can image than you think how on earth is this going to be a pancake. The mixture is so thin! Trust me, everything is works perfect!

For a sweeter taste I use vanilla sugar in the mixture. This ensures a really amazing sweet flavor. After adding the sugar mix it together. Take a baking pan on medium heat and add the butter. When the butter is ready add a scoop of pancake mix in the pan. The biggest rule for making Dutch Pancakes: the first one will fail. I don’t know why this is, but when you making the pancakes, the first one is never good. With this recipe you can make between 8 and 10 pancakes. You will notice that the pancakes are really thin when flipping them. When you serve them you add for example sugar on the pancake and roll them up. You don’t stack them like American Pancakes, you eat one pancake at the time!
