What is the definition of Poffertjes

The meaning of Poffertjes is:

”Small pancakes, that are eaten in the Netherlands. The poffertjes are thicker because because they rise. They are eaten with butter and powdered sugar”.

Today there is a great recipe on the menu. If you’ve ever been to the Netherlands, especially in the big cities like Amsterdam, you’ve probably come across a shop that sells this. In the Netherlands, Belgium and Germany it is mainly eaten as dinner, but can also be a dessert.

There are actually two ways to make the poffertjes. You can use yeast and baking powder to make them rise. If you don’t have baking powder at home now, but do have dried yeast, you can use the same amount as shared in the recipe below. It is important that you ensure that the milk is slightly warmer. This helps with the rising process. Then let the bowl stand for 70 to 80 minutes.

There are many options how to eat this dish. The original recipe is to put a slice of butter on the top of the poffertjes and then sprinkle with powdered sugar. You can also choose to add whipped cream with chocolate sauce. Whatever you like best!

Poffertjes Recipe

This dessert recipe is so easy. You need the follow ingredients: flour, buckwheat flour, baking powder, vanilla sugar, salt, eggs, milk, butter and powdered sugar.

The first step is grab your mixing bowl. Add the dry ingredients in the mixing bowl (150 grams of flour, 150 grams of buckwheat flour, 7 grams of baking powder, 2 grams of salt en 8 grams of vanilla sugar). Mix the dry ingredients together.

The next step is to add 2 medium eggs and 50% of your milk (175 ml milk). Mix the eggs and the milk to the dry ingredients. Make sure you don’t get lumps. Add the rest of the milk and the melted butter to the batter. Mix again the ingredients together. Again make sure you don’t see any lumps.

Place your poffertjes pan on the stove on medium heat. Grease the pan with butter and add the batter to the poffertjes pan. If you see that the top of the poffertjes becomes dry or get bubbles, you can turn the poffertjes over. For the first time they may be a little too dark or too light. You have to get into a rhythm, then you will see that making poffertjes goes very quickly. When the other side is also ready, remove the poffertjes from the pan and repeat the process. Add the poffertjes on a plate with butter and powdered sugar on top. Enjoy!
