A few years ago I went out for dinner with family in a restaurant and I ordered a tomato soup in advance. You would say not a very spectacular start, but I really appreciate a good tomato soup. This tomato soup contains cream and square hard buns. At first I didn’t realize what it was, but it tasted really good. It gave the dish a nice addition, crispy. Today I’m going to talk about these crispy bits. In this article, we’ll take a closer look at how to make Croutons.

What is the definition of Croutons

The meaning of Croutons is:

”Bread or baguette cut into square pieces and then baked in a frying pan, deep fryer or oven”.

Making Croutons

You can make your own croutons or simply buy them at the supermarket. The second option is of course the easiest. But the first option, making it yourself, is more fun and really much better. Croutons are small toasted sandwiches of maximum 1 cm. You can use old bread, new bread or baguette for this. I like them best when made with French bread. Of course the square cubes must contain herbs. You get the most out of this snack. You can use the small baked buns for:

To make croutons, I recommend using the following ingredients: baguette, olive oil, garlic and Parmesan cheese. The first step is to make sure you get squares. You can do this quickly by first cutting the bread in half vertically. So you have two halves left. Then cut the halves horizontally and then horizontally again. You then have 8 baguette pieces. You then cut this vertically to make the squares.

Move the pieces in a bowl. Here you add the olive oil, garlic, Parmesan cheese, salt and pepper. Mix this all well together. Then you take a baking tray with baking paper and spread out all the pieces. Make sure they have plenty of room. If you notice that certain pieces of bread are still dry, you can run extra olive oil over them.

Preheat the oven to 180 degrees. When the oven is completely preheated, put the baking tray in for 10 to 12 minutes. The croutons should be golden brown and crispy. It may take a little longer in some cases. Have patience! When they are are crispy, take them out. It’s time to add them to your salad, soup or stew!

How to make Croutons 

Above I have already explained how to make the croutons that you can use for the Caesar salad, soup or other dishes. Below I will briefly describe it in its entirety:

  1. Start with cutting the baguette in half
  2. Make another cut horizontal in both baguettes
  3. Cut again the baguettes horizon, you will have 8 pieces
  4. Cut the baguettes now vertical to make squares
  5. Put the squares in a bowl
  6. The next step is to mince the garlic. Add this to the bowl
  7. Add olive oil to the bowl and start with grating the Parmesan cheese. When the Parmesan cheese is grated add this to the bowl with salt and pepper
  8. Mix everything together
  9. Preheat your oven to 180 degrees celcius
  10. Add the baguette squares on a baking plate with baking paper. Make sure that every square has enough space when baking.
  11. Bake the baguette 10 to 12 minutes or until golden brown.
  12. Take the baguettes out, you have made yourself the most crisp croutons!
