I am so excited about this recipe today. This is really a dish that you only eat a certain part of the year. Normally when it’s getting colder. It’s so tasty. You can serve it as a side dish, but you can also use it as a dessert. I’m sure you’ll like this! in the Netherlands this recipe is familiar under the name ”Stoofperen” or ”Stoofpeertjes”. In this article, we’ll take a closer look at how to make Stewed Pears.
What is the definition of Stewed Pears
The meaning of Stewed Pears is:
”A sweet pear that is cooked for a long time in spices, giving the flesh a dark brown / red color”.
Stewed Pears
This dish really reminds me of winter. In the past we often ate it at home. It was often eaten with the main course, but it can also be purely a dessert. Today I describe it as a dessert.
Making stewed pears is not that difficult. You need good pears. I always use Gieser Wildeman. Next you need red wine or port. You can make your own choice here. If you don’t want to use alcohol, you can also use berry juice with water.
The taste of the pears comes from the spices. You can experiment with this yourself. Ultimately, this is a quick dessert. Within 15 minutes the pan is on the gas and you actually have to wait for the rest. You can keep the pears in the fridge for a few days after making and then reheat them. For me, a really good pear is one that is very soft. After 3 hours you can see how soft the pear is and decide to keep it on the gas even longer! You can serve the pears with some ice cream!

Stewed Pears Recipe
This dessert recipe is so easy. You need the follow ingredients: Pears, red port, cloves, orange zest, cinnamon stick, star anise, caster sugar and all spice grains.
The first step is to peel a kilo of pears with a peeler. Make sure to leave the stem in place. When you peeled the pears you rinse the pears under the tap. Place the pears in a large pan. Add the red port, cloves, orange zest, cinnamon stick, star anise, caster sugar and all spices grains to the pan.
Bring the pan to a boil. When it boils place it over a low heat with a lid on top for the next 3 hours. After 1,5 hours turn the pears over if you notice that some pears do not yet have the beautiful red color.
After 3 hours turn off the pan. You can serve the pears warm or cold. If you want to use the liquid for a little sauce you need to do the following things: spoon some liquid into a separate saucepan. Bring this to a boil and add some cornstarch. Mix it well to make it thicker. Turn off the gas and serve the sauce next to the pears. Enjoy!
